Special permission had to be obtained to shoot on location at the beautiful Jiuzhaigou National Park in Sichuan Province, China, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though the film is digitally color graded, no adjustments were made on the lake as they already possessed an unearthly blue color.

Jiuzhaigou National Park is located near the Tibetan border, many ethnic Tibetans live in the area. D. P. Erik Tomasson, and director Hidetoshi Oneda stand with the Tibetan guide who led the production team through the surrounding forests to search for the perfect location.

Costume designer Zale Morris created the wardrobe as well as play the role of the Doctor. Morris specializes in period costumes and his meticulous attention to detail and historical accuracy adds authenticity to the fantasy film.

Jiuzhaigou held many natural surprises besides the famous lakes. As pristine as this scene looks, it was shot just off the side of the main road.

This shot was filmed through a shallow plexiglas pan of water to create a simple ripple effect. The water needed to be heated with hairdryers because the air was so cold that the surface would freeze between takes.

After shooting in China wrapped, a car with director Hidetoshi Oneda, producer Frank Mele, director of photography Erik Tomasson, production designer Nathan Amondson, and their driver, slipped on the treacherous roads and fell 180 feet off a cliff. Miraculously, other than a broken rib and nose, no one was injured. Here, Nathan Amondson stands in front of the wreck.
